Bicycle detection and wayfinding Stadtunnel Zurich

Overview

The Stadttunnel bicycle parking in Zurich is one of three facilities serving the area around the main train station, where cycling and rail travel meet at high volume every day. Commuters arriving to catch a train need to park quickly and reliably, and the operator needs to keep each facility orderly and available. This project delivers a smart bicycle parking system that guides cyclists straight to vacant spaces and gives the operator full oversight of how the parking is used.

Scope

  • Detection. Spot sensors monitor occupancy in real time across the facility, providing an accurate live picture of which bicycle spaces are free and which are taken.
  • Wayfinding to vacant spaces. Dynamic signage and indicators route cyclists directly to available spots, removing the search and easing flow through the parking even during peak commuter times.
  • Management of abandoned bicycles. Occupancy data over extended periods flags bicycles that remain in place beyond a set threshold, letting the operator identify and clear abandoned bikes and recover capacity that would otherwise be lost.

Value

A better experience for cyclists through real time guidance to free spaces, and strong parking management for the operator, with live utilization insight, automated detection of abandoned bicycles, and the data to keep a busy station side facility efficient and available.
