Overview
The University of Amsterdam operates across multiple campuses and buildings throughout the city, where cycling is the default way students and staff get around. With bicycle parking spread over many facilities, riders need help finding not only a free spot but the right building, and the university needs a single view across every location. This project delivers a multi facility smart bicycle parking system that guides cyclists from the street to a vacant space and gives the university full oversight of every parking it runs.
Scope
- Detection. Spot sensors monitor occupancy in real time across each facility, providing an accurate live picture of which bicycle spaces are free and which are taken, both indoors and outdoors.
- Wayfinding to vacant spaces. Dynamic signage and indicators route cyclists directly to available spots within each parking, removing the search and easing flow even at the busiest times.
- On street wayfinding. Signage on the approach roads guides riders to the right building and the nearest facility with available capacity, balancing demand across the campus before cyclists arrive.
- Multi facility management. All locations are managed together, giving the university a single live overview of utilization across every parking.
- Management of abandoned bicycles. Occupancy data over extended periods flags bicycles that remain in place beyond a set threshold, letting the university identify and clear abandoned bikes and recover capacity that would otherwise be lost.
